Building a Better Backyard: How the Holmes Family Transformed an Outdoor Space with EZblocks

When it comes to creating spaces where families can thrive, Mike Holmes and his team always go above and beyond. Recently, they took on a special project on their newest show Holmes on Homes: Building a Legacy for Rachael and Robin, a couple with a unique set of challenges. Their daughter Bree was born with trisomy 13, a condition requiring significant medical care and accessibility accommodations.

The Holmes Family stepped in to make their newly purchased home not just livable but a place where everyone could truly thrive—and EZblocks played a key role in transforming the backyard into a functional and beautiful outdoor oasis.

Creating a Functional and Versatile Outdoor Space

One of the key goals of the project was to design an outdoor space that would encourage the family to spend more time outside together. With Bree’s medical needs requiring careful consideration, Mike, Sherry, and Michael Holmes wanted to create a low-maintenance and versatile backyard solution. That’s where EZblocks came in.

Using EZblocks, the team built two planters with integrated seating and a stand-alone bench for the deck. The modular, tool-free design of EZblocks made it easy to bring the vision to life quickly and efficiently.

“I love this block because it’s like a kid’s block,” Mike Holmes shares in the episode. “Instead of mortar, we’ve got these metal strips that lock in like Velcro. It’s pretty cool, actually.”

Effortless Assembly with EZblocks

What makes EZblocks so special? It’s their innovative, modular design that allows anyone to build with ease. Here’s why they were perfect for this project:

  • No Tools Required: Just stack and secure the blocks using the built-in metal strips—it’s as easy as playing with building blocks.
  • Versatile and Adaptable: As the family’s needs change, the structures can be disassembled and reassembled into something new, like a doghouse or additional seating.

Durable and Weather-Resistant: Designed to withstand the elements, EZblocks are perfect for creating long-lasting outdoor solutions.

The Holmes family effortlessly constructed the planters and benches, showcasing how simple it is to use EZblocks. “You could take it apart and build something else—a doghouse, a bench,” Michael added. “It’s just a little bit of seating, but mostly planters. I also think it helps break up the backyard a little bit” shares Sherry Holmes.

The Final Result: A Backyard Oasis for a Thriving Family

The final result was both functional and stunning. The planters and seating brought structure and style to the backyard, creating an inviting space for the family to relax and enjoy time together. The Holmes Family’s thoughtful design, combined with the adaptability of EZblocks, ensured that the backyard was not just a beautiful addition but also a practical solution for Rachael, Robin, and Bree.

This project highlighted the versatility of EZblocks—and their power to make building easy for anyone. Whether it’s a small DIY project or a family-focused transformation like this one, EZblocks are designed to meet a wide range of needs.

"Plus, as the family grows or their requirements change, they can reconfigure the blocks into something entirely new."

How It All Comes Together

Building with EZblocks is as simple as stacking building blocks, making it the perfect solution for quick, hassle-free projects. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how easily it all comes together:

1. Start with a Plan: Begin by sketching out your design to visualize the structure. Our EZblocks team can also assist with a professional design.

2. Prepare the Base: Ensure you have a solid, flat surface to build on for a stable foundation.

3. Lay the First Layer: Place the initial layer of EZblocks with the tiny little feet, ensuring they are aligned.

4. Stack The Additional Layers: Add the second layer offsetting it from the layer below —similar to laying bricks. Lock them into place using the built-in metal Velcro-like strips and secure them with a rubber mallet if needed.

5. Reinforce with Rebar: Insert rebar through the center of the blocks to tighten and stabilize the structure.

6. Cap and Seal: Place top caps over all block openings and secure them with screws. Use end plugs to close any exposed ends for a clean finish.

7. Finish with Style: Customize your project by painting or staining the blocks, attaching hanging plants, or leaving them natural for a sleek, rustic look.
